Socially Conscious & Ethical Stores in Austin

September 29, 2020

HI! I’m Molly.

Here to encourage you on your own bold pursuit of intentional living as I live out my own. I’m passionate about running, spending time doing what I love and cheering others on to approach running with joy.

I want to share a guide for shopping at socially conscious and ethical stores in Austin!

I have been loving discovering new brands that have an ethos that matches mine. I do what I can to purchase from companies that practice at least one of these categories: fair-trade, sustainable, support small businesses, women-founded. My preference is to shop as ethically as I can, meaning it’s both sustainably made and supports fair-trade! Plus, I feel like everything at companies that value these things have way more unique selections -- not to mention, it's all a much better quality! I've been having so much fun wandering around these stores and am excited to share them with you. Here's my guide to shopping at socially conscious and ethical stores in Austin!

Apartment FMy jaw literally dropped when I walked into this store! They have a huge collection of stunning, Moroccan rugs that are to die for. They also have stunning pantry and home goods, plus a few beauty items, too. I would LOVE to get a rug from here one day! EsbyEverything in Esby is perfection and I swear you will relax the second you walk in the shop. With beautifully designed clothes (designed in Austin, made in the US!), Esby has very classic and timeless pieces in simple patterns and soft colors. I bought an oversized, 100% japanese cotton, button-down top - the Chelle top - and have worn it too many times to count already! They also house a few other goodies from small artists, such as ceramic mugs.  EverlaneEverlane is probably the most affordable, ethical clothing company I’ve come across. I was STOKED to see an Everlane store pop up along South Congress recently and I love all the pieces in person as much as I expected. I purchased a pair of denim shorts to transition into the fall, but I truly, love majority of their simple pieces.

Fail JewelryI was blown away by this gorgeous store! I was expecting all jewelry, but was happily surprised to see half the store full of home goods (including coffee table books that I want alllll of!). All of their jewelry is made here in Austin and I am obsessed with all the minimalist and abstract designs.

Kindred Spirits Kindred Spirits is the sister shop to Take Heart and has such cute, laidback clothes. They carry small batch brands and it’s very clear everything in the shop has been carefully curated. I fell in love with a midi-style dress there and have been dreaming about it since! They carry mostly clothes and jewelry, but have a small collection of home goods, too.

LovecraftNever did I think I’d be the type of person who swooned over candles...but here I am! I walked in and immediately laid my eyes on the coolest candle I’ve ever seen. In addition to a a small collection of candles and home goods, they have vintage and ethical clothing plus dainty and eclectic jewelry. Neighborhood Goods This place is a dream! Their location along South Congress is huge and spacious, carrying various collections from conscious brands, including some of my favorites! They also have  a huge area with a bar and room to drink, work, hang out, whatever.

Slow NorthSlow North is the spot for those interested in non-toxic living. They create botanical products and have a whole wall full of ingredients for you to make their own. Their packaging is biodegradable and they have a ton of zero-waste products too!

Take HeartThey’ve got a little bit of everything and I’m here for it! From my perspective, they have more home goods and wellness products than most of the others on this list. With pieces from all over the world, you’ll find glass-blown vases from Portugal, wooden spoons from Japan and jewelry from Portland, just to name a few. I loved the selection of self-care journals (with plenty of prompts) and purchased a glittery, rainbow candle made by Magic Hour to “awaken my creative spark.” Right next door is the Miranda Bennett studio, another shop with ethically made clothes!
