What I Read in July 2023

August 3, 2023

HI! I’m Molly.

Here to encourage you on your own bold pursuit of intentional living as I live out my own. I’m passionate about running, spending time doing what I love and cheering others on to approach running with joy.

Here is a recap of the ten books I read in July 2023!

July was the biggest reading month I have ever had! It included multiple airplane rides and days on the beach, so it makes sense I was able to read so much. I very clearly gravitate toward specific genres and types of books (I mean, who doesn’t?!). I try to branch out to read other genres and always end up back with fiction, usually romcoms and thrillers. Gotta read what makes you happy!!

Here’s a quick recap of everything I read in July:

The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley by Courtney Walsh

5 / 5 stars

I absolutely loved everything about this book! It will likely end up in my top 5 favorites of this year. The characters are lovable, the plot is engaging and all-around it is just a really fun read. Isadora turns 30 and comes across an article with “31 ways to be happy.” She sets out to prove this article wrong, documenting each step and learning more about herself with each step she takes.

The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin

3.5 / 5

I do love me a good self help book, but at some point…they all start to give the same advice. Great advice, but usually nothing groundbreaking in my opinion. That’s exactly how I felt about this book, specifically for creatives. There was solid advice in this book and several points that really made me think, but I didn’t find anything in there I hadn’t heard before.

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

4 / 5 stars

This was a great, suspenseful read that kept me on my toes the entire time. I read it in one day if that tells you anything haha! It follows the story of seven young Shakespearan actors in school and one day, they find themselves in the midst of their own tragedy.

I’m Glad my Mom Died by Jennette Mccurdy

5 / 5 stars

I’d heard a lot about this memoir and as someone who wanted to be a child actor (lol), I always find it fascinating – and a lot of times, heartbreaking – to hear about the behind-the-scenes of child actors I followed. Jennette uses her sarcastic tone and honesty to share about her life in Hollywood and more namely, everything her mother did to her as a child actor. It’s hard to read because of what happened and made me sad, but I couldn’t put it down. She’s brave for sharing her story!

The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark

3.5 / 5 stars

I finished this one in 48 hours and thoroughly enjoyed it. I rated it a bit lower because I started to get bored as the book went on. Intriguing to read, but felt very redundant and I didn’t feel a connection with any of the characters. It’s a thriller that dives deep into the psychology of two different women and their desire to rewrite the past.

Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter

4.5 / 5 stars

This was an adorable book! Very light-hearted and predictable, but still so much fun to see the plot develop. The book is about a hopelessly romantic teenager who has had a lifelong crush on her old neighbor. She schemes with her other neighbor on how to get him to fall in love with her.

Nora Goes off Script by Annabel Monaghan

4 / 5 stars

If you love Emily Henry, you will love this one! Nora is a romance screenwriter and one of her scripts gets picked up for the big screen. Some of the shooting takes place at her home and after shooting wraps up, she wakes up the next morning to find the main star still at her home and begging to stay for a bit.

The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise by Colleen Oakley

4 / 5 stars

As I read this, all I could think about was how this would make such a fun movie! It was a fun change in pace from all the romcoms I’ve been reading, and I found myself rooting for the characters and their friendship along the way. A college dropout and 84-year-old woman are running from the cops cross-country in this one!

The Bodyguard by Katherine Center

4.5 / 5 stars

Lighthearted and all-around just wonderful, I really enjoyed this one! Sometimes romcom books get too ~steamy~ for me and I liked that this one left all that out (just not for me!). It’s a fun take on a woman who is a bodyguard and finds herself being assigned to a case with a huge movie star.

Ayurvedic Self-Care Handbook: Holistic Healing Rituals for Every Day and Season by Sarah Kucera

5 / 5 stars

I’ve been intrigued by various Ayurvedic practices for a bit now, so I decided to read more on them. Sometimes health books can be too intimidating or too much information to download and I thought this one was just the perfect size and amount to dive into Ayurveda. I’m excited to incorporate more of these practices into my routine!
